Pool Equipment at a Glance

What Equipment Does a Swimming Pool Need?

Every swimming pool depends on several systems working together to circulate water, remove debris, maintain water quality, control temperature, and operate features. The exact equipment package depends on the pool.

Pool Pumps

The pump keeps water circulating through the filtration and treatment systems. Modern variable-speed pumps can provide greater control over circulation while operating more efficiently than many older single-speed systems.

Pool Filters

Your filter removes debris and contaminants from circulating pool water. The right filtration system depends on the pool, equipment configuration, maintenance preferences, and other project requirements.

Pool Heaters

Heating equipment gives homeowners more control over water temperature and can extend the comfortable use of a swimming pool beyond naturally warm days.

Pool Automation

Modern automation systems can bring compatible pool equipment, lighting, heating, water features, and other functions together into a more convenient control system.

Pool Lighting

LED pool lighting can improve visibility while completely changing the appearance and atmosphere of the backyard after sunset.

Sanitization Systems

Pool sanitization equipment works alongside circulation and filtration to help maintain appropriate water conditions.

Pool Pumps

Keep Your Pool Moving.

The pool pump is at the center of your circulation system. It moves water through the filter and other equipment before returning it to the swimming pool. Without proper circulation, filtration and water treatment can't do their jobs effectively.

Modern variable-speed pool pumps allow circulation speeds to be adjusted around different operating needs rather than running at one fixed speed. That can provide benefits such as:

  • More flexible circulation
  • Quieter operation
  • Improved energy efficiency compared with many older single-speed pumps
  • Better control over filtration cycles
  • Compatibility with modern automation systems
  • Different speeds for compatible water features and equipment

Payne can help size and select a pump based on the actual requirements of your swimming pool rather than treating every backyard like it contains exactly the same body of water.

Pool Filtration

Clear Water Starts With Proper Filtration.

Your pool filter works continuously with the circulation system to remove debris and contaminants from the water. Different filtration technologies have different operating and maintenance characteristics.

Cartridge Filters

Cartridge filtration uses replaceable or cleanable filter elements to capture debris as water passes through the system.

Sand Filters

Sand filtration passes pool water through specialized filter media that captures debris before returning filtered water to the pool.

DE Filtration

Diatomaceous earth filtration uses specialized filter media and can provide another filtration option depending on the system and application.

The best filter isn't simply the largest or most expensive one. It needs to be properly matched to the pool, pump, plumbing, expected use, and maintenance preferences.

Pool Heating

Make the Water Comfortable on Your Schedule.

Florida gets plenty of warm weather. That doesn't mean your pool water always got the memo. A pool heating system can provide more control over water temperature and help extend the comfortable swimming season.

Depending on the property and project, equipment options can include pool heat pumps and other compatible heating systems. The right choice depends on factors such as:

  • Pool size
  • Desired water temperature
  • How frequently you swim
  • Seasonal use
  • Property conditions
  • Existing equipment
  • Energy source
  • Whether the pool includes a spa

Payne can help determine which heating approach makes sense for your pool and how you plan to use it.

Pool Automation

Your Pool Shouldn't Need a Control Room.

Modern pool equipment can make operating a swimming pool considerably simpler. Compatible pool automation systems can provide centralized control over multiple pool functions, potentially including:

  • Pumps
  • Heating
  • Pool and spa settings
  • Lighting
  • Water features
  • Schedules
  • Compatible sanitization equipment

Depending on the selected system, some functions can also be managed through connected controls or mobile applications. Instead of walking around the equipment pad flipping switches like you're preparing a small nuclear reactor for launch, automation can bring compatible systems together into a much more convenient interface.

Pool Lighting

Change the Backyard After Sunset.

Lighting does more than illuminate the water. Modern LED pool lighting can transform the visual character of a swimming pool and make the surrounding backyard more inviting after dark.

Depending on the pool and equipment system, homeowners may be able to choose from different lighting configurations, colors, and control options. Lighting can be incorporated into new pool construction or considered as part of an existing pool remodeling project when conditions allow.

Saltwater & Sanitization

More Ways to Manage Pool Water.

Circulation and filtration are only part of maintaining swimming pool water. Sanitization systems help manage the water conditions necessary for a properly maintained pool.

Depending on the pool and equipment configuration, Payne can help homeowners explore compatible options, including salt chlorine generation and other sanitization equipment. A saltwater pool isn't chlorine-free. A salt chlorine generator uses salt in the pool water to generate chlorine as part of the sanitization process. That distinction is worth making because the internet has apparently decided saltwater pools are filled with mystical chlorine-free ocean water.

New Pool Equipment

Build the Equipment System Into the Pool From the Beginning.

Equipment shouldn't be an afterthought during new pool construction. The size and design of the pool, spa, water features, heating requirements, lighting, automation, plumbing, and expected use can all influence equipment selection. Payne considers the equipment system as part of the overall pool design so components can be selected to work together.

Planning early also makes it easier to account for features such as integrated spas, waterfalls, sheer descents, deck jets, heating, lighting, automation, multiple pump requirements, and sanitization systems.

Custom Gunite Pools

Equipment Upgrades

Your Pool Doesn't Have to Be New to Get Smarter.

An older swimming pool can often benefit from newer equipment without requiring a complete renovation. If your equipment is aging, inefficient, difficult to operate, or no longer meeting the needs of the pool, Payne can evaluate the existing system and discuss available replacement or upgrade options. Common upgrades can include:

  • Variable-speed pumps
  • Updated filtration
  • Pool heating
  • LED lighting
  • Automation
  • Controls
  • Salt chlorine generation
  • Equipment needed for new pool features

Equipment upgrades can be completed independently when appropriate or incorporated into a broader pool renovation.

Pool Remodeling + Equipment

Remodeling Your Pool? Look Beyond the Surface.

A pool remodel is the perfect time to look at more than tile and plaster. If you're already investing in an existing swimming pool, it makes sense to evaluate the equipment responsible for operating it. An older pump, filter, heater, lighting system, or control system may not complement everything you're changing above the waterline.

Payne can incorporate equipment upgrades into eligible remodeling projects so the finished pool doesn't just look newer. It can operate with newer technology too.

Choosing Pool Equipment

What Pool Equipment Is Right for Your Pool?

There isn't one equipment package that's right for every swimming pool. A straightforward swimming pool has different requirements from a large pool with an integrated spa, multiple water features, extensive lighting, and heating. Equipment selection can depend on:

  • Pool volume
  • Plumbing configuration
  • Pool and spa combination
  • Water features
  • Heating requirements
  • Desired automation
  • Filtration needs
  • Sanitization preferences
  • Existing equipment
  • Available space
  • How the pool is used

That's why equipment should be selected as a system, not as a collection of unrelated boxes sitting on a concrete pad. Payne can help identify equipment that works together and fits the requirements of your particular pool.

Energy-Efficient Pool Equipment

Can New Pool Equipment Reduce Energy Use?

In some situations, upgrading older equipment can reduce the amount of energy required to operate a swimming pool. Variable-speed pumps are one of the most common examples because they can operate at different speeds rather than forcing the pump to run at full speed whenever it's operating.

Automation and properly configured operating schedules can also provide greater control over when compatible equipment runs. Actual energy use and savings depend on the existing equipment, new equipment, pool configuration, operating schedules, utility rates, and how the pool is used. We'd rather tell you that than manufacture a suspiciously precise percentage that somehow applies to every swimming pool in Florida.

We got a pool from Payne Pool a little over a year ago. We went with a gunite salt water pool. I should have written this review then. They did a wonderful job with what we requested. They extended our patio at a fraction of the price of what other's were quoting us. My only issue is that I wasn't too impressed by their "pool school" they held for us right after the construction. I had no manuals that were left behind or anything to reference. It was A LOT of information especially for people that have never owned a pool before. However, I will say that any time I have had a question they kindly answered me and always fulfilled my requested. I recently had Jonathan come by and do a quick "pool school" session with me. He was kind and patient and shared valuable information I didn't receive the first time.

Pool Equipment FAQ

Questions About Pool Equipment

Most inground pools require a circulation pump, filtration system, plumbing, and sanitization system. Additional equipment can include heaters, automation, lighting, water-feature pumps, and other components depending on the pool design.

A variable-speed pool pump can operate at multiple speeds rather than running at one fixed speed. This allows the pump's operation to be adjusted for different circulation and equipment requirements.

Variable-speed pumps provide greater control over pump operation and can use less energy than many older single-speed pumps under appropriate operating conditions. The right pump still needs to be properly sized and configured for the pool.

There isn't one filtration system that's best for every swimming pool. Cartridge, sand, and DE filtration systems have different characteristics. Pool size, equipment configuration, maintenance preferences, and other factors should be considered when choosing a filter.

In many cases, heating equipment can be added to an existing swimming pool. The existing plumbing, electrical service, equipment configuration, available space, pool size, and other factors need to be evaluated first.

Many existing pools can potentially be equipped with a salt chlorine generation system. Compatibility with the existing pool, equipment, materials, and plumbing should be evaluated before installation.

Yes. A salt chlorine generator uses salt dissolved in the pool water to generate chlorine. Saltwater pools still rely on chlorine for sanitization.

Often, yes. The options depend on the existing equipment and compatibility with the selected automation system. Payne can evaluate the current equipment configuration and determine which functions can reasonably be integrated.

Yes. A pool remodeling project can be a good opportunity to evaluate pumps, filtration, heating, lighting, controls, automation, and other aging equipment.

Yes. Payne can incorporate pool equipment selection and installation into new pool construction so circulation, filtration, heating, lighting, automation, and other systems are considered during the overall design.

Payne provides equipment replacement and upgrade services in applicable markets. The existing system should be evaluated to determine appropriate replacement equipment and compatibility.

Payne provides pool equipment installation through regional operations serving multiple Florida markets, including Florida's Gulf Coast, Tampa Bay, Greater Orlando, Jacksonville, and Northeast Florida. Specific services and equipment availability vary by market.
